Day 22: Why Saying “God Loves You” is NOT Evangelism

The leader of my Evangelism Team just posted this message on our groupchat, and it embodies my issues with the overused phrase “God Loves You!”…..

When witnessing, please don’t randomly say “God Loves You,” as people walk by.

If someone has been stealing money from their employers, or is just coming home from an illicit affair, and now is told randomly that “God loves them,” there will be no conviction of their sin. They’ll think… “Great, I’ve got nothing to worry about then.” And on they go.

We need to counsel people in the FULL scope of God’s Word. Nobody will be saved from their sins until they realize that they are sinners in need of a savior.

So sin must be personal to them.

THEIR OWN SINS must burden them.

God HATES sin.

Sin separates people from God.

This is desperately important.

Making people feel comfortable in their sin is not loving them, it is actually condemning them.

Psalm 5:4: “For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.”
