The Break Up

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

 – Hebrews 12:1

Sometimes, Sin feels like an Ex. A long term partner who has now become an old flame.

But how do you know when you are truly free from something?

For many of us, Sin has been such a constant throughout our lives, that to finally come to Christ, to repent of all our hidden, dirty and filthy wrongs and to accept His love, forgiveness and acceptance, it is almost like ending a relationship.

Do you still reminisce about the good old days?

Does your mind still recall past memories?

Do you still relive old encounters?

Do you find yourself imagining what could have been?

Similarly to old relationships, sometimes we find ourselves drawn back to our former Love(s).

We miss the companionship.

We long for the passion.

We yearn for the familiar feelings.

I have yet to encounter a pain-free break up. They are by their definition hard, but as difficult as they are, they are necessary.

When we break up with Sin, it is inevitably a challenge. We may not fully know why we are doing it, but we know that we must do it.

We may find ourselves second-guessing our decision, but we stick with it.

The difficulty in breaking up is allowing yourself time to heal. For the next few days/weeks/months post-break up, you are going to want to be back in it, because it was your normal, and such a drastic change is always uncomfortable.

But be uncomfortable – God knows we need to get uncomfortable with Sin.

Perhaps you are reading this and you are stuck in a damaging relationship with Sin. Whatever it is, I do not know and I am not about to starting listing 101 flavours of Sin because God Himself knows.

There are certain Sins we need to break up with. Maybe there is a particular Sin that you need to break up with right now. What is it? Some of us have been caught up in something for so long, we can hardly tell where it ends and we begin.

But God knows. The only question is are you willing to confess it to Him?

Let us take this moment to pray for forgiveness, to pray for the power to overcome the temptations and to pray for the grace to live free from the shame. God has already liberated us from Sin and wants us to live life free of the guilt.

Stop beating yourself up.

Stop living life in regret.

Make a decision to break up with sin and watch God cause your sorrow to turn to joy.

Have I told you about my Ex?…..

His name is Sin…..
