What Type of Friend Will You Be In 2017?

Happy New Year Everyone.

This year, I hope we can all strive to become better friends to each other. I was pondering the state of friendships, which has become so messy with the invention of ‘frenemies‘, and I was reminded of something I wrote a few years back….

God help the man who sows dissention amongst brothers…or sisters for that matter.

Where I’m from, we have a word for that. Snakes. And nobody likes a snake.

All this time I thought that you were down but you just had your body close to the ground so you could pick up all the dirt you needed. Snake.

– Stephanie Solomon, Lizards and Snakes

I remember writing this little piece a few years ago, in my 2nd Year at University. It was specifically written about someone who had tried to cause some confusion between a couple of my friends.

I remember feeling so disgusted at his behaviour, and so disappointed at how easily friends can become enemies.

But why the shock?

The Bible tells us that the heart of man is desperately wicked (who can know it) in Jeremiah 17:9, so we should not be surprised.

Men and women can be unashamedly wicked when utterly desperate, but do not let that that phase you.

Proverbs 21 has a lot to teach us about the way we are as humans and the way we interact with each other, specifically verse 2:

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

Make a decision to be a good friend this year. Don’t get caught up in other people’s affairs, business or drama – and above all else, check your motives before acting, because God will inspect your heart.
