One of my favourite and often repeated phrases is ‘By their fruits, you shall know them‘ and it applies to Christians, from those who are blazing hot to those who are tepid and lukewarm.
In Matthew 3:10, John the Baptist gives a stern warning to the crowds regarding what end befalls those whose fruits are, shall we say, questionable..
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
It doesn’t get much clearer than that.
Each person must bear fruit appropriate to their tree.
Now before we came to Christ, we were limited to only bearing bad fruit, and specifically trapped in producing the same types listed in Galatians 5:
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
The list above are the types of fruits born-again and spirit filled Christians should have no business with, however, let’s take a moment to see if that is true in our lives.
Christians, are we able to say that we are producing the fruit that accurately reflects our faith?
We need not look far for a list:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Check the list again – beside these nine fruits, there is no law. I mean, what law need apply to a person who is walking and acting in love, joy, peace, longsuffering…shall I continue?
By their fruits you shall know them indeed, but begin with your own tree first…
